Introduction

Why ADAS Matters for the Future of Mobility

Mr. Saurabh Kumar highlighted how ADAS is at the core of modern EVs and autonomous vehicles:

  • ADAS is the technical foundation of autonomous driving, built on sensors, embedded systems, and control.
  • The ADAS market is growing rapidly, with multi-billion dollar projections in the coming years.
  • With the EV boom in India, ADAS-related roles are expanding along with Battery Management Systems (BMS), Autosar, and embedded software engineering.

He emphasized that engineers must maintain a “learnable brain”, continuously upgrading skills to stay relevant, or risk being replaced in a fast-changing industry

Inside an ADAS System: Sensors, ECUs & Actuators

Using a simple block diagram, the speaker broke an ADAS system into three main components:

  1. Sensing (Input):
    • Radar, lidar, ultrasonic sensors, and cameras capturing the external environment.
    • The vehicle in which ADAS runs is called the “ego vehicle”
    • Other traffic objects are “target vehicles/objects”
  2. Thinking (Processing / ECU / DCU):
    A microcontroller or ECU processes sensor data, filters noise, fuses information, and runs decision algorithms.
  3. Acting (Output):
    Actuators (brakes, steering, throttle, etc.) execute controlled responses decided by the ECU.

A key takeaway: sensor calibration is non-negotiable. Poorly calibrated sensors can lead to wrong decisions and unsafe behavior.

Data Management & Sensor Fusion in ADAS

The session then focused on data management and fusion:

  • Real-world sensor data is noisy and must be:

    • Filtered (e.g., using filters to remove noise)
    • Segmented and processed
    • Converted into meaningful features for prediction and control
  • Data fusion / sensor fusion combines multiple data sources
    (e.g., camera + radar + lidar) to overcome limitations of a single sensor
    – such as a camera struggling in darkness, or radar missing visual cues.

Because ADAS features can be hazardous if wrong, precise understanding of the physical world via fused data is critical.

Implementing ADAS Features & Decision Making

To connect theory with code, Mr. Saurabh presented an example of Automatic Emergency Braking (AEB):

  • Inputs: ego vehicle speed and relative distance from the target vehicle (e.g., from radar).
  • Logic:
    • In a polling loop, the microcontroller continuously reads distance and speed.
    • If distance < threshold (e.g., 15 meters at 80 km/h), the ECU decides to warn or brake.

Two output modes were highlighted:

  1. Informative Mode:
    • Warn the driver with IVI warnings (dashboard/infotainment messages) and beep sounds.
  2. Automatic Mode:
    • ECU directly commands the actuator to apply the brakes.

Safety, Fail-Safe Strategies & Testing (HIL / SIL)

Safety in ADAS is not just about triggering actions; it is about controlled and predictable behavior:

  • Avoiding sudden, harsh braking; instead following a controlled deceleration profile.
  • Running a routine self-test of sensors each time the car starts.
  • Implementing fail-safe strategies:
    • If a sensor or computation fails during a journey,
      control should smoothly revert to the driver, with an IVI warning that ADAS is unavailable.

For validation, he explained:

  • HIL (Hardware-in-the-Loop):
         Check if the physical ECU output (e.g., 5V to an actuator) matches expected behavior.
  • SIL (Software-in-the-Loop):
         Validate the decision-making code against scenarios, edge cases, and failure conditions.

ADAS Intelligence Cycle: Sense – Think – Act

The ADAS intelligence cycle was summarized as:

  1. Sensing: Understanding the real-world scenario via sensors
  2. Thinking: Running decision algorithms on processed data
  3. Acting: Commanding actuators to implement the maneuver

Students saw how this cycle scales from simple ADAS features today to autonomous driving tomorrow, blending electronics, software, and mechanical control.

Vision, Ranging & Real-World Challenges

The masterclass also addressed:

  • Vision systems: Cameras and lidar for lane, object, and sign detection
  • Ranging: Radar/ultrasonic for distance measurement
  • The concept of “line of interest” in sensing – if a hazard appears outside the sensing zone, the system may fail, so engineers must design safe deceleration strategies.

Tesla and other autonomous systems were discussed as case studies:

  • Use of sensors + GPS + satellite data for 360° awareness
  • Challenges of deploying full autonomy in Indian conditions, such as:
    • Unpredictable objects/animals on roads
    • Mixed traffic and varying infrastructure
    • Hence, practical focus remains on informative / assistive ADAS (Level 1–2) rather than full autonomy.

Vehicle-to-Everything (V2X) & Data Requirements

The session introduced V2V (Vehicle-to-Vehicle), V2I (Vehicle-to-Infrastructure) and V2N (Vehicle-to-Network) communication:

  • Vehicles can share information (e.g., traffic ahead, hazards, congestion).
  • Regardless of the source, data is the fuel of ADAS and autonomy.

Interesting fact shared:

  • A driverless car can generate approximately 2–4 GB of data per kilometer, demanding High-Performance Computing (HPC) – left as homework for attendees to explore further.

Coding for ADAS: Languages & Mindset

Mr. Saurabh simplified the coding angle:

  • The ADAS pipeline is: Collect data → Process / Filter → Decide → Output action
  • Choice of language depends on the board/platform:
    • C / Embedded C / C++ / Python are common.
  • You don’t need to be a “coding wizard”:
    • Strong basics in syntax, data types, control flow and ability to call libraries is enough to start.
  • With basics clear, you can shift between languages and platforms confidently.

Live Demonstrations: Python & MATLAB for ADAS

The masterclass included practical demonstrations:

  1. Python + OpenCV (Image Processing)
    • Detecting traffic lights, stop signs, no-entry signs
    • Using HSV color space to focus on the region of interest and suppress background noise.
  2. Lane Detection & Lane Departure Warning
    • Detecting lane boundaries.
    • Computing the center of the lane.
    • Triggering a warning when the vehicle drifts out of lane.
  3. MATLAB Simulation
    • An ego vehicle dynamically altering its path curvature to avoid collisions with vehicles and pedestrians.
    • Showed the professional coding rigor required for safety-critical systems.
