What is E20?
Starting April 1, 2026, all petrol pumps across India must sell petrol blended with 20% ethanol at a minimum RON 95 octane rating. This replaces the earlier E10 blend and the standard ~91 RON petrol. Ethanol is domestically produced from sugarcane, maize, and surplus grains. The government retains authority to grant temporary exemptions for specific regions.
The Big Picture — At a Glance
⛽
What Changes?
All petrol now has 20% ethanol (was 10%). Octane jumps from ~91 to 95 RON. Premium fuels like XP95 & Power 95 become redundant — saving you money.
🚗
Who's Affected?
~50% of pre-2022 vehicles report mileage drops. 29% report unusual engine wear. Post-2023 cars are factory E20-ready with no major issues.
💸
Economic Impact
India saves ₹43,000 Cr/year in oil imports. Farmers get ₹40,000 Cr/year. But pump prices haven't decreased despite blending savings.
🌱
Green Impact
30% lower carbon vs E10. 65% GHG reduction with sugarcane ethanol. But water-intensive production & food-vs-fuel concerns persist.
⚠️ Public Sentiment
A LocalCircles survey of 36,000+ vehicle owners found 66% oppose mandatory E20 — 44% demand withdrawal, 22% want more fuel choices. Key grievances: no price reduction despite blending, forced adoption without alternatives, concerns about political connections to ethanol producers, and India becoming a net corn importer.
