JSW EV Manufacturing Plant: A Major Boost by Odisha Government
In a landmark decision, the Odisha government has given the green light to the JSW EV Manufacturing Plant, approving the proposal for setting up electric vehicle (EV) and component manufacturing units. This initiative, a part of 14 approved proposals, was announced following a Cabinet meeting led by Chief Minister Naveen Patnaik, marking an investment of Rs 40,000 crore in Cuttack and Jagatsinghpur districts.
Strategic Implementation of JSW EV Manufacturing Units
The JSW EV Manufacturing Plant is strategically planned for Naraj in Cuttack and Paradip in Jagatsinghpur. Chief Secretary Pradeep Kumar Jena emphasized that these projects are poised to revolutionize industrial growth and job opportunities in the region.
Phased Development of JSW’s EV Project
The JSW EV Manufacturing Plant is set to unfold in phases:
- Phase One: Involves establishing an EV and EV battery manufacturing unit in Naraj, Cuttack, with an investment of Rs 25,000 crore, generating over 4,000 jobs.
- Phase Two: Focuses on setting up an OEM plant for EVs and components within the same facility.
Expansion Plans for the JSW EV Manufacturing Plant
The next phase of expansion for the JSW EV Manufacturing Plant includes setting up an EV components manufacturing complex in Paradip. This phase, incorporating a copper smelter and a lithium smelter, represents an additional investment of Rs 15,000 crore and aims to create over 7,000 jobs.
Sustainable Development Initiatives by Odisha
Alongside the JSW EV Manufacturing Plant, the Odisha government approved the ‘Coffee Plantation for Sustainable Livelihoods (CPSL)’ scheme to promote coffee plantation across six districts with an outlay of Rs 1,144 crore.
Policy Reforms and Biotechnology Focus
The Odisha Government Land Settlement Rules, 1983, will be amended to facilitate this growth. Additionally, the Odisha Biotechnology Policy 2024 was approved, aiming to boost the state’s biotechnology sector. The policy includes the creation of a dedicated directorate for biotechnology, aligning with the state’s focus on technological advancements.
